intertextuality - Robbie Williams/ Kiss

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when an idea has been referenced or used from one piece of media in another. Inspiration is often taken form older media such as films or performances. Some forms of intertextuality may mock the original or portray it in a humorous way; this is known as a parody. Intertextuality can help create or change a certain image or target a particular audience because people will be interested in something they can relate to or something they recognise.

Robbie Williams has used intertextuality from the band Kiss. This is evident, in his music video “Let me entertain you”, through his choreography and costume. In the beginning Robbie is seen almost biting the head of a dove, this is a very obvious reference to when Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off of a live bat and dove during on stage performances. Robbie Williams has also copied the iconic black and white makeup style of the band Kiss. This accompanied with his wild movements makes Robbie look more like a Rockstar than an ex-boy band singer. Overall this use of intertextuality helped Robbie Williams create an image of his own and kick-start his career as a solo artist.

  1. Helen, this is starting to shape up well but still needs a bit more work / improvement / effort.

You has some detailed posts, some are less so.

1 Add a post on the history of the promo - analyse examples that show how conventions have been established / developed over the years.

2 Intertextuality - explain why it has been used, what meanings . ideas does it create about the artist?

3 Illustration / amplification / disjuncture - you need to post three video that show this and discuss how these three approaches are used.

So far this is about C grade / proficient - work to improve on this.

  2. See last comment - you still need to address these issues - point 3.

You haven't posted what was required this week - lyric analysis, band biog, song structure - why not?

Your next step is to analyse two or three promos of the same genre as you are producing and analyse how they use conventions - needs to be genre specific. Still look at camerawork, editing and especially mise-en-scene as indicators of genre.
